Five Simple Ways To Help Your Pets During A Move
You've decided to relocate to a better subdivision, and the stress of moving is starting to get to you. The amount you have to handle is growing day by day; but make sure you don't forget about your pets! Before things get too crazy, here are five tips to assist de-stress your pet when moving.
Are Your Dog's ID and Shots Current?
This is an important step and should be completed well before the move happens. So take an afternoon, visit your vet, get the booster shots you need, and update the information on the pets tags or internal chips. During this turbulent time, make sure that you list a cell phone for your contact details on the pets' tags and chip. That way if something happens, someone will be able to contact you. This way if your pet gets lost, the rescuers can contact you even if a landline to you isn't available.
Turn the Moving Day into a Moving Week.
As a general rule, dogs and cats do not like to be thrust quickly into an unknown environment. They know that something is happening, and can often become distressed if it happens too fast. Therefore, begin the process of packing your things well in advance of your moving day. Allow your cat or dog to explore the boxes, take a few sniffs here and there. Be sure to leave their things like the bed or toys out for their reassurance and enjoyment as long as possible. Another tip is to take a quick visit to the subdivision with your pet if you're able. Let them sniff around and explore the area under your close supervision. You should never let go of the leash. There is no way you want a lost cat in a brand new town.
Tip 3: Keep Your Records in Order.
Moving to a new town often means that you will most likely have to prove that your pet is properly vacinated soon after you settle in. So be certain to prevent all the paperwork you need in one easily accessible spot. Then both you and your pet can focus on spending time together and moving into your new house.
Make Sure Your Cat is a Part of Your Activities.
During the moving process, pets will often become nervous, skittish, or fearful. The pet will most likely act inappropriately as well. Pets don't always get that things will settle down soon enough, so as the head of the household, required to] reassure them. So take a break each day and "hunt the pointer light" with your cat. Once everything is in the house, you can release them to explore their new house. The rest of the day should be spent interacting with your dog or cat in some way. With a little effort on your part, they will realize that this is their new and safe living space. Don’t be alarmed if they spend their time split between exploring the house, playing with you, and visiting their sleeping area. It’s all a part of the process.
