Frequently Asked Questions...
Have you seen the newest Midwest Cage?
Has anyone seen the new Critter Nation cage yet? (They were originally going to call it Rat Nation.) http://www.forhappydogs.com/c-42-small-animal.aspx If so, what do you think of it? Do you think it will be better for rats than the ferret nation cage? http://www.forhappydogs.com/c-38-ferrets.aspx
Answer:
I've been in contact with MidWest since they began the designing process for this cage. Although the pans aren't as deep as they originally intended, the newly designed cage is a great option for rats and one that I myself will be purchasing.
The bar spacing is better for rats than the Ferret Nation. Although some rats had no problems with the bar spacing in the FN, small adults and young rats have been able to slip through the bars with no problems.
The new cage is 30% heavier than the FN is so this could put off a potential buyer, but it is necessary for the tighter bar spacing.
Both cages are easy to clean with double opening doors and slide out bottoms so the primary difference you will see is just the bar spacing. I would invest in this for your rats. This way if you get more in the future (we all get the Gotta Get More Rats syndrome sooner or later!) you'll be able to put the young ones in the cage as well instead of finding another cage until they are large enough for the FN.
Good luck!
