Crate Training - The Efficient Method To Potty Train A Puppy
Crate training facilitates housebreaking your dog. It works well be since dogs want to sleep where it is clean and using a crate, that is the proper size, can keep a dog from going potty inside the crate.
Being successful with crate training requires on-going supervision. Success with crate training does not come from keeping your dog in a crate for hours. Your must be wholeheartedly involved. Never leave your dog alone in his crate for more than 4 or 5 hours. If your schedule cannot accomodate this perhaps you should not have a dog.
You can make the crate comfortable by placing a bed inside, as well as some chew toys. You don't want the crate to me too large. If there is room for your dog to stand up, lie down, and stretch out it should be large enough. You can purchase different size crates as your puppy grows or you can choose to buy a crate he will fit into when he is full grown. If you choose a larger crate be sure to section it off and adjust it as your puppy matures.
Take time, when you bring your puppy home, to help him become familiar with his crate. Praise your dog enthusiastically and give him a treat when he enters the crate. Your dog should not become distressed. If he does get upset and you remove him from his cage he will see that as a reward for his whining.
While you are house training your puppy he should be in his crate most of the time. Your puppy should be taken out of his crate only to go potty, to eat, and if you are playing with him.
Do not reprimand your dog, when he has an accident, unless you catch him. This only sets your dog up for failure because he becomes confused since he doesn't understand what he did wrong.
Crate training will help your dog learn the proper behavior if you establish a set routine. Your dog will become confused if he does not understand exactly what you expect of him.
Take your puppy outside about 10-15 minutes after he has eaten. Since he should eat outside his crate you will need to put him back into his crate, for that amount of time, before taking him outside. Praise your dog warmly after he eliminates outside. Then spend time with him for about thirty minutes to an hour. You can play with him or take him for a walk.
Since a puppy's bladder is small he will need to be taken outside frequently. This time will, of course, lenghten as he matures. Your dog will learn to give you a signal when he needs to go outside if you have trained him correctly. Through constant supervision you will soon gain an understanding of your puppy's signals.
When your puppy is three months old he will probably be able to go through the night without going potty. Your puppy will be able to wait about 5 hours during the day as he approaches four months of age.
There are many advantages of crate training. A crate can help keep your puppy out of mischief, it can keep him safe from dangerous situations in your house, and it can help prevent separation anxiety.
Your dog's crate should not be used as a form of punishment. Always give positive reinforcement so it will be a place your dog wants to be. If used properly the crate will help you to quickly house train your puppy and it will also become a familiar place where your dog will feel safe and secure.
