According to experts, if your cat is fat, it may have some breathing problems that could lead to some fatal conditions. How can I get my cat to exercise more?
The emaciated stray I adopted 6 years ago has become fat and happy. In fact too fat and happy. Vet suggested he go on diet as he neared 18 pounds a year ago. I reduced his food to 2/3 cup of dry food daily and after months of watching him gaze sadly at bottom of his empty food bowl, I am happy to report he has lost 2 pounds. But my efforts to engage him in exercise have not been as successful. He'll play with a freshly infused cat nip mouse for about 30 seconds and then roll over with a glazed look in his eyes and a smile on his lips for the next two hours. He'll watch a laser dot flit around for a minute or two and then tries to push it out of my hand so I'm free to pet him. Basically he likes to sleep in a lap - any lap. Any hope this couch potato will ever move?

My cat is about the same. When he was 5 he weighed 18 pounds as he was free-fed. I just assumed he was past the playing age. The most I've ever seen him move is now that I have a dog and he occasionally gives the dog a run for her money. He also likes to watch the bird feeder so that may be something to consider. Other than that he has the same extremely short attention span.
We're down to a little less than half cup of dry food a day (if he only ate dry) and he weighs 12 pounds. He still begs for food but I've gotten good at ignoring it. Some vets recommend a wet food diet as a healthier option and therefore a good option for weight loss. It has more protein, less fillers, but the extra moisture content helps also. I suspect it makes them feel more full but it's also really good for them over all. Experts are starting to link dry food only diets and kidney issues. If you don't want to go all canned you can do a variety. My cat gets about a quarter cup dry, a third of a can wet, and an ounce of raw chicken daily. He still thinks of the canned food/chicken as a big treat
